3-D PRINTING | making a model

August 11, 2016

Healy Partners Architects are working on an exciting project in Limerick City which extends across a large block spanning Bishop's Quay - Henry St. The project is in the design stages as we prepare for a planning application very soon!

We engaged with the team at FAB LAB to create a 3-D printed model of the proposed scheme to help our Client, LCCC & very importantly ourselves understand the project and how it slots into its city context. Huge thanks to Mike & Ger of FAB LAB for all their help so far.

As an architectural practice we will most certainly be making a lot more use of this great service right on our doorstep. The full city model is worth a visit to FAB LAB just to see a creation from a 3-D printer.

Also available for use is a laser printer - we saw some great samples of work cut from this printer yesterday.

We took a trip out to UL yesterday (FAB LAB undergoing works at their premises on Rutland St. and due to move back soon!) to see the model 3-D printing and fit our proposed building into the large 1:500 city model. Fascinating!!

In simple terms (real simple!) a 3-D file is sent to the printer and the model is created using a coil of acrylic material which is fixed to the back of the printer and fed through the printer technology. The model is built up layer by layer so the taller the building the longer its going to take.

The 'ULTIMAKER' 3-D printer - aptly named!
