House at Castlequarter - Multi Award Winning

- RIAI Regional Award

- Clare Design & Conservation Award

The brief for this project was to provide a family home for a young professional couple and their young daughter. The house is set into the side of a rocky hill on a western facing slope overlooking the town of Sixmilebridge in County Clare.

The house is made up of two distinct volumes.  The rectangular white masonry element to the rear accommodates all the bedrooms, bathrooms and utility.  The glass and timber element to the front of the house is the living block and is formed with 5 steel frames.  The open volume has a sloping ceiling, allowing morning sun from the east, and the space uses walls to a height of 2.2 mtrs to define the different uses with this single space.

This front volume opens out onto a large terrace / deck area allowing the living area of the house to extend outwards over the summer months. This terrace / deck area is support by stilts off the ground and the design works to highlight the setting of the building into the hillside.
