The Milk Market

The redevelopment of the Milk Market to allow the market trading to extend into other weekdays provided the opportunity to propose a dynamic solution which placed a large tensile structure within the existing courtyard but still achieve a strong sense of being outdoors.  The design solution also permitted the market courtyard to be used for leisure and entertainment facilities, which also benefit the full-time traders located in units around the courtyard perimeter.  Since the project was opened to the public in June 2010, there has been (apart from market activity) use of the public space for music and choir recitals, performing arts and arts & crafts events.  The client is still considering alternate uses for the space, but the project is seen by the local authority as an important catalyst for the regeneration of this portion of Limerick City.  Project worked to develop an existing market area, working with existing traders in order to provide a more attractive location for the customer. The project intentionally advanced to respect the nature and fabric of the existing market and area with a focus to reinforce existing business and provide opportunities for new small scale businesses (particularly in food & craft areas) to emerge and develop.
